PayPal

Hey there friends! We had a great day, yesterday, sharing memories of Pearlington with the Church Family at FPC. It was so good to hear the experiences of other people. Hopefully I will get them to report HERE soon!

We have decided to take down the PayPal button. Our mission to Pearlington has been completed at this time. If God decides we are to go back, the PayPal button will show back up.

Thanks for your support, encouragement and help through the years. We have been blessed!

Happy New Year!!!!!

There is always some question, on these trips, as to whether or not we will have enough work to do. Really it's not a question of if there is work, it's whether the work is ready for us or not. That has not been the case this trip.

Sunday afternoon, after worshipping together at our rental homes and lunch out (Popeye's Chicken...Jolynn was happy), we headed out to "the country" and Ms. Donna's house. There was a communication breakdown, so Ms. Donna thought that we weren't coming. But her neighbors were quick to alert her to the 3 black cars heading toward her house. There is much to do at Ms. Donna's and the crew got right to work. 16 people working on her home could have been really overwhelming but Ms. Donna took it in stride. Pete's team has been working out there ever since. They have been treated to dinner two nights, have nicknames for members of their team (Primer Babes, Frou-Frou Coffee Queen, etc.) and have marked off many of the items on Ms. Donna's list...though the list keeps getting longer. The amount of things in this house is amazing. Almost every room is filled to the brim with boxes and stuff. The kitchen had stuff all over the counters, the range, in the sink, everywhere. The Momma's decided that this was a room to tackle and between them all working on it a little over a day and a half her kitchen is clean. Reports came back that on Tuesday the team walked in to the smell of food that had been cooked and not a dish in the sink or on the counter...but a sweet note. It will be posted after we get home. There is so much happening, not just on the house but in Ms. Donna's soul, too much to share now, but suffice it to say, God is at work in big ways.

Momma Gail, Amber and Ellen have been repairing mistakes from previous volunteers at Ms. Pauline's house. They've been stuck in a closet the last few days repairing dry wall from when the closet shelves fell off the wall...bad installation. Ellen has been using her gift of listening in a big way this trip, and has had some poignant conversations with people at Ms. Pauline's house. There are some gifts that we are given that have little to do with repairing buildings and everything to do with rebuilding hope and joy in the soul's of the people we meet. Our team is lucky to have Ellen with us.

A mix of new crew and old crew have been hanging out at Captain John's house continuing to paint. The good news is that the scaffolding has moved! 3 sides of the house are done, paint has been purchased to put on the porch ceiling and things are moving along. We got rained Wednesday, which led us to the Yellow House now called the "Purdy House" (that's Pretty in southern). Pulling up baseboards, replacing a window pane and paint scraping were the jobs for the day. Captain John and Joel, his son, are constantly checking on our work, which is fun. Joel brought out his new pellet gun on Monday, to the delight of Sammy, Jonathan, Steven and Emily. They took turns shooting at targets out in the bayou. Tuesday Joel brought out the 22 gauge shotgun...that was a hit as well. Joel has also "gifted" us with some fireworks. We'll be heading down to the beach tonight to shoot them off...over water...away from the rental houses.

It's hard to believe that there are only one day left. Personally, after almost two weeks here, it still doesn't seem long enough. We do what we can do, and we do what we do with joy, with laughter and with the knowledge that God has lead us to this place, for this time, for a specific and good reason. We are blessed by the work that we are able to do and by the people we meet along the way.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and the prayers. This has been an amazing time. There are many, many stories to tell, so watch this space in the next few weeks for more stories...and pictures! Under a time crunch tonight, sorry!

Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

What a beautiful day it has turned out to be. After a day and a half of rain, the sun has returned, the bayou's are receding and we got to walk on the beach. Yea! Christmas Eve, Jeff cooked shrimp. Jolynn and I spent time peeling and de-viening before cooking. Thanks to Aunt C. for those lessons! The Walton clan headed home on Christmas Eve, leaving Jeff, Jolynn, Regina and I to continue to scrape the floors at Mr. Pat's house. We finished the living room and were headed down the hallway into the bathroom. It was fun to work and talk and laugh! Oh the laughter. Walking out of your shoes took on a whole new meaning as the souls of our boots stuck to the floor. We all decided no sticky mousetraps in our houses! Too cruel!

Wednesday afternoon, Ellen spent some time chatting with Captain John. It was really special to hear them talking and laughing, sharing about life, and what-not. At one point I heard Ellen say "Well, they say that Jesus probably built the yokes for oxen." It was a sweet moment of the day.

We've got a new house to go to once the 2nd half of the group comes in. It's up in the "country" as Ben said. Probably about 20 minutes away from our rental homes. The house sustained wind and tornado damage from Hurricane Katrina, not to mention some shady dealings with a hired carpenter. It's frustrating to hear the stories of people hiring on help and getting swindled out of money and getting shoddy work. We'll be traveling up to Ms. Donna's house on Sunday afternoon to meet her and get a better idea of the jobs we'll do.

The work will continue at Captain John's. I'm happy to report that the front half of the house is completely painted, the scaffolding was put up on the right side of the house on Tuesday night, which was fortunate seeing as the bayou started rising early Wednesday morning. Jolynn and Doug persevered and have the right side primed and half of it's painted Twilight Jungle, with a layer of Autumn Surprise underneath. The left side of the house is completely primed. It's coming along

We had hoped to get back to Ms. Ana's house this trip. Lynn went over to talk with her and Ms. Ana decided to just keep her house as is, seeing as she has out of town guests through the holidays. We'll miss being there but word on the street is there is plenty to do!

Santa stopped by our house last night. It was nice to sleep in, enjoy bacon, eggs and cinnamon rolls and take our time together. We are blessed to be celebrating the birth of Jesus together. Thanks for your support!

The home stretch--updated

8 of the 19 Team members leave on Friday for Mississippi. We are SO ready! There are little details that still need to be done, like making sure the walkie talkies have batteries so we can communicate from car to car, putting fresh band-aids and super glue in the first aid kits (yep, we've super-glued wounds shut before!), getting all the directions printed out and of course, that whole packing thing.

There is still some fundraising to be done as well. In the last week some stats have changed a little, so here's the rundown.

7 people have their trip completely paid for.
7 people are within $200 of goal.
3 others have between $201-400 to go.
2 team members need over $400.

In our PayPal Challenge Ralphie/Jeffy is still in the lead with 18 donations...Ellen is in 2nd with 5, Debbie hangs in with 2 and the Waltons are at 1. There's still time to enter the race!...which reminds me of a song from Sawyer Brown "The race is on and here comes pride in the backstretch, heartache coming to the inside..."...maybe not such a great song to be reminded of huh?

We will gladly receive donations anytime! If they get here before December 30th, it will be tax-deductible for 2009! Paypal or snail mail works, just look on the sidebar for more information.

I spent a few hours at the beauty salon today. It felt good to just sit and relax for a while. As I was there (it was a longer appointment, sometimes a girl just needs a little help) I made a list of all that I would like to accomplish in the next week before heading to Mississippi. It's a long list. Some things are pretty important, other things aren't so much...I started to write down "wrap Christmas presents" and then realized I could just bring my presents to church on Sunday morning and have them wrapped for me! I almost did a happy dance right there in the beauty salon. YES! The team will be wrapping gifts on Sunday morning starting at 8:45am and ending whenever the last gift is wrapped. They will be there the following Sunday as well, December 20th. Donations gladly accepted.

My friend and hairstylist donated part of today's fee to my trip as well. One of the first things she asked was "what do you need". What I said? Prayer. Money is helpful, prayer is really the thing. I know she's good for that one! Prayer sponsors and financial sponsors are what make this trip run smoothly. God bless y'all!

Speaking of finances our thermometer keeps creeping up...here's the end of the week rundown:

7 people have their trip completely paid for.
5 people are within $200 of goal.
4 others have between $201-400 to go.
3 team members need over $400.

In our PayPal Challenge Ralphie/Jeffy is still in the lead with 16 donations...Ellen is in 2nd with 5, Debbie hangs in with 2 and the Waltons are at 1. There's still time to enter the race!

By the way, KPIG fans are awesome!!!!! We've had donations come in from Indiana, Connecticut, Virginia, Alabama, Oregon and all over CA from KPIG fans...so very cool. Thanks for supporting Ralphie and the team!

And just a reminder for our team, our final meeting and team commissioning is on Sunday. Commissioning is at 9am and 11:15am, team meeting at 10:30am (I'm pretty sure it will be in the fellowship hall...just an FYI). Hopefully your t-shirts will be here as well!

News article

Gail found a news article the other day in the SJ Mercury about the state of things in Mississippi when it comes to housing. Click here to read it for yourself. There is one line that just hit me like a ton of bricks and reminded me, again, why we keep heading back to Mississippi. It said "nearly 20,000 families are still living in temporary trailers and apartments." Twenty thousand families just in Mississippi. Words fail.

4 days...

Until 7 of us return to Pearlington and 1 goes for the first time. The news today is the highs are in the 70's and low 80's during the day, high 50's at night and there are thunderstorms. Which isn't great because the Pearl River has been above flood stage for about a week now and it's not receding super fast. More thunderstorms brings more water. Pray for receding water...there's a house that we could work on if the water recedes!

Another week done

Our final day has come and is almost gone. It is also the first day of a new year and I couldn't think of a better way to spend it than working in Pearlington. There are many highlights from the trip that I would love to share with y'all, but to be perfectly honest, it's 11pm our time and I'm so tired my eyes won't stay open. I'm gonna run down the basics of today and hope y'all come back to read more stories even after we come home!

Miss Anna's crew did an AMAZING job on her house. They have about 92% of it covered with primer and about half in the final coat of paint. They decided against putting Debbie up on the ladder on top of the scaffolding for safety reasons...which I appreciate! Miss Anna was so appreciative of all the hard work and fed them a fabulous lunch/snack today not to mention Mexican Coffee.

Miss Maria's house crew did a fantastic job with framing and electrical work. I sat and watched Bill test the lights in one part of the house several times to make sure it worked well. And there was a whoop of joy that could be heard up and down the street as the framing crew accomplished their tasks!

Captain John's site had some setbacks today but Joey didn't care! He was trained to drive a Bobcat and was the chief cement hauler. He was also a box retriever...pictures coming soon!

Mr. Lee's crew did an fantastic job clearing the yard of debris, dead trees and salvaging items. Every time Mr. Lee would come around a corner and see something else done he would quietly say "Yea!" or "Oh Wow!" before moving onto to another part of the property with a smile on his face. This was also the burn pile site, which suited some people (Meggie) very well.

Tonight we are packing up our bags and getting ready for a few hours in New Orleans tomorrow before we return home. Pictures will need to wait for tomorrow or Saturday...my eyes won't stay open any longer! Good night!

The end of 2008

The last day of 2008 is coming to a close in Mississippi in an hour. The young adults in the group are in the living room of "Vanna Whites" house watching a movie after a good day's work. There have been highs and lows, triumphs and challenges and a LOT of laughter. I haven't laughed as much in all 6 six trips as I have on this one. There's just a spirit of laughter that permeates all that we do...but then I laugh easily so maybe it's just me.

One group headed to a new job site today. Mr. Lee is working on leveling his house and needed help and other repairs done as well. Jonathan, Douglas and Guy spent the day there, crawling under the house, making sure things were level, putting on roofing materials and cleaning up the yard. Mr. Lee and his wife are supposed to be out of their Katrina Cottage in March and nothing, seriously, nothing has been done to get their house in any kind of decent living condition. There's a lot of work to do but at least it has officially begun.
The crew at Miss Maria's continued to work on framing, electrical work and baseboard. Meggie got to use a hammer drill and still feels jittery. Craig was on a ladder and Bill worked hard getting all the wiring just right. Mark, Adam and Joe fought over power tools and the best way to use them (Mark won). Jonathan cut a lot of baseboard and Zach helped wherever needed. One of the greatest things that I saw in my brief moments on this site was Zach helping Adam figure out the best way to nail in one of the boards for the room framing. That spirit of encouragement and support is rampant on this site! Our largest crew is at Miss Anna's house and they are rocking and rollin'! The conversation in the van on the way to the site was all about how to get to the top of the house (it could be considered 3 stories). Mid-morning there was paint at the top of the left side of the house. Too cool! The crew here has really bonded with Miss Anna, there are a lot of stories about her at our evening meetings and there's a huge push to make sure the whole house is at least primed before quitting time tomorrow. I have a feeling I'm going to have to pull them off the site!
Mid-afternoon we got back to working on one of the sites that we started the first day, Captain John's house. Gail and I took a drive out with Ben, Miss Sue and Rick to look at the holes that had been dug for the pylons (I have no idea if I spelled that right). They were half full of water but that doesn't seem to be stopping this crew! Zach and Joe were pulled off their sites to build framing boxes. Gail and I pitched in and hopefully we'll be able to drain the water and install the boxes tomorrow. It's seems like a great way to start the new year, putting in supports for a house! We are blessed to be able to end 2008 in Pearlington with people we have come to love as friends and begin 2009 with them as well! Happy New Year!

Monday's Round-up

We're still trying to get pictures off of camera's and onto the blog but have found that we're taking fewer pictures this time around...hopefully that will be rectified in the next couple of days. I did post pictures earlier today, so look below this post!

Today was a rare day in Pearlington work...most everyone had something to do all day long.

We started off standing around a little waiting for Ben to drop off some supplies before handing out our assignments. Craig and Bill headed out to Miss Maria's to do more electrical work and soon were calling asking for more help. A crew of 4 manly men (Douglas, Jonathan, Zach and Mark) headed over to haul full sheets of sheet rock out of the house and down probably 20-30 stairs. They wound up staying there all day doing many various jobs. From what I hear they are still learning the value of measure twice, get directions 5 times, cut once.

Joey and a couple others another group that's here spent the morning power washing a tractor. A picture should have been taken of the spotted arms that he came back with. Definitely muddy out there! They joined the crew that went back to Miss Carolyn's house (Jeff, Guy, Adam and Cedar Blvd. Church) to paint, finish tiling, and do various other little projects. I didn't hear much from that group tonight, so I honestly can't tell you what their successes were today!

Miss Anna's crew (Sandy, Lynn, Melanie, Sammy, Debbie, Ellen and Elizabeth from Cedar Blvd. Church ) returned to her house and their paint job. They are priming the entire house and garage and taking great care. Her house is the oldest house in Pearlington but it doesn't look old. Once the paint is on it will be one of the most beautiful homes in Pearlington again. Miss Anna is ecstatic with her crew. She stood at the gate waving and calling out "I love you!" to the crew as they left. They responded with "We love you Miss Anna!" I know there were tears in many eyes. They will be back at it tomorrow!

Gail, Meggie and Regina spent the day painting Ben's shed and putting up trim work as well. It may seem like a little job but something else was happening as well. Ben paid them the ultimate compliment today by handing them the tools, giving instructions and walking confidently away. Gail especially appreciated his confidence in her as he showed her how to use a nail gun and then drove away to other sites where his skills were more in need!

I spent the morning driving around a little but then something amazing happened after lunch. My phone didn't ring for 3 1/2 hours. Not once. I got to stand on a ladder and paint trim (painstakingly in my typical semi-perfectionist tendencies). It was heavenly!

Tomorrow is another day and it's coming up fast. We'll be taking a couple of hours to tour around Waveland & Bay St. Louis, some for the first time. In the meantime it's time for sleep! Good night!

This friday!

We leave this Friday! I'm so excited! I'm ready...well, okay, maybe not ready as in have all my bags packed, paperwork, various stuff that I wind up carting with me to Mississippi each time prepared but emotionally ready to be in Pearlington. I'm praying for two very specific things:

1. Team unity. Our meetings have been good and it seems like a good group but we can always pray for team unity.

2. A clear day of travel on the 26th. Flying in an out of Denver. It worries me...and so does the report that their are luggage issues there as well. Might want to pack an extra pair of...:)

Here's where we are financially as of today:

Amount needed: $16,000
Amount brought in: $15,075
Amount still needed**: $2,546

Number of people on the team: 20
Number of people fully sponsored: 11
Number of people within $150 of being fully sponsored: 6

We can do this!
**If you are confused by this number see previous posts on the subject.

Keep up the great work!

Wednesday Update

It's a been two weeks since my last finance update so let me first apologize. Thanksgiving kind of messed up my whole week last week! I'm sorry!

As of this week our numbers look like this:

Estimated amount needed: $16,000
Amount received to date: $12,002
Amount still needed: $5,083

Okay, now I can see a few of you shaking your heads thinking "Brittany really needs to take math again, those numbers aren't adding up." and you are right, they don't. So here's the explanation.

Some people have raised all their support and are still recieving money from sponsors, which goes into the "slush" fund enabling us to buy supplies while we are in Pearlington. Other people have given to the team as a whole and not any individual person so that goes into a seperate column but gets added into the total. Confused yet? Here's one more for you...the "amount still needed" really is still needed. That amount is what we really want to see get lower because that means that all the team members have raised their support! And that's the overall goal!

To make this even more fun, here's another statistic for you:
There are 20 team members.
6 team members have completely paid for/raised support for their trip.
8 team members are within $300 of their goal
6 team members still need over $300.

My point...keep asking people for help! We can do this!

Fundraiser, Fundraiser, Fundraiser!

I had the whole announcer voice thing going on in my head while I typed that blog title. Just thought you would like to know that.

December 6th from 2-6pm the Mississippi Mission Team is holding a Kid-Sitting Fundraiser at Felton Presbyterian! For a mere $20 per child (there is a deal for families) we'll take care of the kids while parents head out to go shopping, have a late lunch, go to a movie or just have 4 hours of peace! Snacks will be provided along with amazing Kid-Sitters! And we promise not to actually sit on them...much.

For all you Mississippi Team members that means that we need your help between 1pm and 7pm. Anyone who helps will have part of the proceeds put towards their trip. So spread the word, get kids there! It's gonna be fun.

As for our weekly updates...drumroll please...(yes I'm a little excitable today, I've been stuck at home sick all week, give me a break.)

Estimated amount needed: $16,000
Amount received to date: $8,904
Amount still needed: $7,096

2000 in a week isn't bad...but we can do better! Let's get that number lower!

Wednesday Update

I've been waiting and waiting all day for the mail person to come. Yesterday there were 4 checks in the mail. It was so exciting to open them and see which wonderful person was sponsored this time around!

But the mail person hasn't arrived yet...and I really don't want to post anything until they do because we are almost at a particular point in our fundraising and it would be SO cool to have that number to share...yet sadly the mail person isn't arriving. Writing about it isn't helping. So, I'm going to postpone my Wednesday update til Thursday and hope, hope, hope that the mail person arrives!
